Vada

We took Vada in from a college student who spotted her running the streets in Rochester. Just by looking at Vada you wouldn't necessarily think that she was a nice dog. She is a short, stocky, block head, jacked up, ear cropped Am Staff. The girl that found her didn't hesitate for a second and took her home that night. Vada was skinny and appeared to have some issues with her eyes because she would continuously blink and wouldn't open them all of the way. She also appeared to of had a litter not to long ago.

Our rescue group decided to take her in not knowing her background. We also knew that she would have a decent amount of medical expenses due to her not being spayed, no history of vaccinations, and having some eye issues. The girl who found her pleaded with us and said that there was something special about Vada (named after the movie "My girl"). She didn't want this sweet dog to go to a kill shelter or end up in the wrong hands. We took her to Seneca Animal hospital and had her examined.

She was given a Fluorescein test on her eyes. Dr. Kadlek stated that she had eye entropion and that she had a small ulcer on one of her eyes. Eye entropion is a condition in which the lower eyelid turns inward, rubbing against the eye. When this happens the eyelashes and skin rub against the eye, making it red, irritated, and sensitive to light and wind. Dr. K said that this poor girl had lived with this issue for quite a while. We were told that she could have surgery on her eyes to correct the problem. The excess skin in the upper eyelids could be removed surgically to improve the field of vision and other symptoms.

We also had her tested for heart worms but luckily she tested negative. We had some additional vetting done such as a bordatella vaccination, parvo/distemper vaccination, a fecal exam, as well as a rabies vaccination. During this visit we received Novox (pain medication) and Tobramycin which are drops for the eyes. This Vet visit came to $170.00. We scheduled her surgery for a couple of weeks in which she would have her spay and eye surgery at the same time.

Vada went to her appointment and did really well. Immediately we could tell that her eyes were wider and that the eye lashes were no longer rubbing against her eye. Dr. Tomaschke did a wonderful job performing her surgery. Vada had to wear this huge cone around her head which she was not very happy about. She would hold her head down, bumping into everything, but the Vet said that she had to wear it so that she couldn't rub her eye against anything or use her paws to scratch at them. This was TORTURE to Vada! She would cry and make all of these sad noises but we had to keep that cone on. We were given Cephalexin which is an antibiotic used for the healing process as well as more pain medication. The surgery, spay, medication, and cone all came to $533.00. Thank you to Seneca Animal hospital and staff for their discounts and great care of Vada.

A couple of weeks later we took her back to Seneca to have the sutures in her eyes removed. We were then given Metronidazole medication due to her having diarrhea. This came to $13.00. Apx. a month later she was having diarrhea again but this time she had blood in her stool. Being that her previous fecal came back negative, the Vet gave us some more metronidazole as well as Sulfasalazine. That medication came to $24.00. This has cleared up any issues that she was having. This dog has been through a lot but still remains as friendly and gentle as can be. She is currently up for adoption if anyone is willing to give her a forever home. All of her Vet bills totaled $740.00. Please contribute towards this amount. She deserves to live a life free from pain and discomfort. We would not be able to afford all of our Vet bills without the help of our caring and loving supporters. We are truly non-profit meaning that none of us at BPC receive a salary and 100 percent of every donation received goes towards our rescue animals. Thank you for helping out a dog who had no home, no Vet care, and was lucky enough to have an amazing college student pull over to help her.
