Gabbi
UPDATE 5/13/10: Gabbi had her final skin scrape today which came back negative! She is clear of mange and ready to be adopted! ![]() ![]()
Gabbi is an 8 month old puppy who has had a very tough start in life. She was in a happy and loving home as a little pup, when her owner died. She ended up at a kill shelter where she started showing signs of Demodex Mange. The shelter did a scrape and said that it came up negative, so she sat in the shelter for a month without treatment while getting worse and worse.

The shelter knew that there was something wrong with her, but didn't have the funds to treat her. She then went on the "To be euthanized list". We received an email from a nice woman in West Virginia asking if we could take her in. Our rescue group said yes, so they drove her out here.

When we first saw her, we couldn't believe our eyes. Here was this extremely scared puppy, crying in pain. We were afraid to touch her because we didn't know if she was contagious or not. We didn't want to pet her because she had open bloody sores all over her body and we knew that it would be painful. Until she went to the vet the next day, we couldn't allow her near any other animals and had to put her in a crate by herself. As you can see in the photos, she has these sores from the top of her head to the tips of her feet. She couldn't stand the itching so she continued to scratch which would make her scabs even worse.

The next day we took her to the vet. We went to Banfield in the Petsmart in Orchard park so that Dr. Roberts could take a look at her. The vet tech along with Dr. Roberts, were at a loss for words! All they could say is "Poor baby"! I mean just look at her....Unfortunately, she had to scrape her skin in a couple of various areas so that they could look at it under the microscope. It was really hard to watch, because she was in such pain as it was and now she had to have the skin scraped which would cause more pain.

Dr. Roberts came back and told us that she had Demodex Mange which is caused by a microscopic mite that lives in the dogs skin. She said that she saw every stage of mite on her (Ovum, Larva, Protonymph, Nymph, & adult). She also said that she had a rather high temperature along with a secondary infection from not being treated. She gave us special shampoo, Ivermectin, along with some antibiotics.

Gabbi is now in a wonderful foster home, getting the care and love that she needs! Please help us cover Gabbi's medical care. As soon as she gets healthy, this sweet and loving puppy will be able to be put up for adoption and go to her new forever home. Thank you to Dr Roberts along with the team at Banfield along with Lisa and Aaron, her foster mom and dad!
